What is iOS 15.5 and why should you update?

iOS 15.5 is a software update that brings enhancements to Apple Cash, Apple Podcasts, and other apps and features on your iPhone. It also fixes some bugs and security issues that could affect your device's performance and privacy.

Some of the highlights of iOS 15.5 include:

  • Apple Cash now lets you send and request money from your Apple Cash card in the Wallet app.

  • Apple Podcasts now lets you customize your storage limits for downloaded episodes.

  • Photos now has a list of sensitive locations that are excluded from Memories slideshows.

  • HomePod now shows Wi-Fi signal bars in the Home app.

  • Universal Control is now officially out of beta, allowing you to use a single mouse and keyboard across your Mac and iPad.

  • Verifiable health records now support adding vaccination records in the EU Digital COVID Certificate format to the Wallet and Health apps.

  • HealthKit query APIs in Swift now support async/await syntax.

  • Safari now prevents tracking of users in private browsing mode by malicious websites.

  • FaceTime now supports spatial audio, voice isolation, wide spectrum, portrait mode, grid view, web links, and SharePlay (coming later this fall).

  • Messages now has a Shared with You section that shows content shared by your contacts in other apps.

  • Focus now helps you reduce distractions by filtering out notifications based on what you are doing.

  • Notifications now have a redesigned look and a notification summary that delivers a collection of notifications at a scheduled time.

  • Maps now has a redesigned interface with a new three-dimensional city experience and augmented reality walking directions.

  • Live Text now uses on-device intelligence to recognize text in photos across the system and on the web.

  • New privacy controls in Siri, Mail, and more provide transparency and give you more control over your data.

As you can see, iOS 15.5 is packed with features that can make your iPhone more useful, enjoyable, and secure. That's why you should update to iOS 15.5 as soon as possible.

Back up your iPhone using iCloud

iCloud is a cloud-based service that lets you store your data and settings online. You can use iCloud to back up your iPhone wirelessly and automatically, as long as you have enough iCloud storage space and a Wi-Fi connection. Here's how to do it:

  • On your iPhone, go to Settings and tap on your name at the top.

  • Tap on iCloud and scroll down to iCloud Backup.

  • Make sure iCloud Backup is turned on. If not, toggle the switch to enable it.

  • Tap on Back Up Now to start the backup process. You can see the progress and the time of the last backup under Back Up Now.

  • Wait for the backup to finish. Do not disconnect your iPhone from Wi-Fi or turn it off until the backup is complete.

You can also set up iCloud to back up your iPhone automatically every day when it is connected to Wi-Fi, plugged into power, and locked. To do this, just turn on iCloud Backup and leave your iPhone as it is at night or when you are not using it.

Back up your iPhone using your computer

You can also use your computer to back up your iPhone using iTunes (if you have a Windows PC or a Mac with macOS Mojave or earlier) or Finder (if you have a Mac with macOS Catalina or later). You can use this method if you don't have enough iCloud storage space or if you prefer a local backup. Here's how to do it:

  • Connect your iPhone to your computer using a USB cable. If prompted, unlock your iPhone and tap Trust This Computer.

  • On your computer, open iTunes or Finder and select your iPhone from the sidebar.

  • Under Backups, choose This Computer and check Encrypt local backup if you want to protect your backup with a password.

  • Click on Back Up Now to start the backup process. You can see the progress and the time of the last backup under Latest Backup.

  • Wait for the backup to finish. Do not disconnect your iPhone from your computer or turn it off until the backup is complete.

You can also set up iTunes or Finder to back up your iPhone automatically every time you connect it to your computer. To do this, just check Automatically back up when this iPhone is connected under Options.
